Johnny Greaves – Short Course

“Today they all just got beat by a grandpa!” exclaimed Johnny Greaves in an on stage interview in 2022 after yet another Pro4 win, holding young grandson Jackson in his arms, giving an insight into the longevity of the remarkable short course career of Johnny Greaves. With over two hundred short course wins, including more than 100 in Pro4, Johnny has established himself as one of the winningest drivers in short course history.

Beginning at age 12 in motocross, Johnny Greaves has won races and championships in every level of competition. At 23, he switched to four wheels and soon earned success while buggy racing in SCORE off-road desert and SODA short-course off-road series. In the early 1990s, Greaves earned multiple buggy-class championships, including an incredible “double” in 1992 with titles in Class 1-1600 and Class 9.  That same year, Greaves took his first steps in compact trucks by racing select events in Class 7s.  In 1993, he began racing trucks exclusively and debuted with a Toyota SR-5, finishing the season in the winner’s circle at the final two events of the SODA season.

From 1994 to 1996, Johnny won two championships and more than 70 percent of the races he entered. In 1997 Johnny developed a two-truck Toyota team with his closest rival, Jeff Kincaid. Greaves/Kincaid Motorsports won 19 out of 20 races while capturing the championship for Johnny and a second-place finish for Jeff in both the SODA Series and CORR Winter Series. The Greaves Kincaid team would continue to dominate the CORR Pro-Lite compact truck class in 1998 and 1999.

Johnny made the move to full-sized trucks in the year 2000 with a two-wheel drive Pro2 Toyota Tundra.  In 2001 he made another jump up to the Pro4 and the beginning of a decades-long short course success story in the class. In 2021 Johnny earned a career milestone 100th Pro4 win.

2012 marked the beginning of a new era for Johnny Greaves Motorsports as CJ Greaves, Johnny’s son, took the wheel of a Pro2 for the first time. “There were times when I was like, not yet Junior,” laughed Johnny, “you know, dad’s still going to be on top.” In the 2015 Cup race at Crandon, Johnny and CJ crossed the finish line one-two, Johnny in Pro4 and CJ in Pro2, one of many highlights in their generational family racing saga.

The father son duo of Johnny and CJ Greaves have been a short course success story for more than two decades and show no signs of slowing down their competitive winning ways.

“I want to be remembered for being a huge part of short course,” Johnny said, “Not just racing, but keeping it alive, and helping it grow.”

Johnny will be officially honored at the off-road industry’s biggest night of the year, the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame Induction & Awards Gala in Las Vegas. It takes place on the Sunday before The SEMA Show, November 3, 2024, at the beautiful South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa.
