CRANDON, WI (June 25-26, 2016) — Thousands of off-road enthusiast converged on Crandon International Raceway the past weekend for rounds 5 and 6 of TORC–The Off Road Championship. Revelers of all ages, some for the first time but many faithful who return year-after-year for the “Crandon experience” and to see absolutely the best off-road racing on the planet–a bevy of sportsman class races, the pro classes, and the FC Potawatomi Cup race. As usual, The duo of Johnny and CJ did not disappoint and put on amazing performances for the crowd. Defending champ CJ Greaves had a breakout weekend with back-to-back wins in Pro2 and a win and a 2nd place finish in pro4. He shattered the track lap time record that was previously held by Johnny. CJ also edged his dad for the 2nd place spot on the podium in the FC Potawatomi Community Cup race. Johnny was in the lead on Saturday in pro4 when he experienced race ending mechanical problems with only 2 laps to go. He came back strong though on Sunday and took the win with CJ right on his bumper for 2nd. Johnny maintained his points lead and CJ edged up to 3rd in the Pro4 standings. CJ moved ahead of Keegan Kincaid for the points lead in Pro2.
CJ Greaves lined up in the middle of the 7 truck field for the famed land rush start in Saturday’s Pro2 action. The mad rush to the Potawatomi turn 1 had everyone holding their breath as all 7 trucks tried to squeeze into the turn. CJ made it through and by the start/finish line had moved into 2nd behind Keegan Kincaid. The top 2 checked out and pulled away from the rest of the field by more than 10 seconds. CJ battled Keegan in every turn. On lap 5 of the 9 lap race, CJ went for the pass in the backside hairpin turn. The two made contact and together did a 360 degree turn. They were so far ahead of the other racers that they both were able to right their trucks and continue battling leading up to the competition caution.
When the green flag flew once again, the top 2 wasted no time getting back to their fierce battle. With 2 laps to go, CJ was setting up to pass when Keegan suddenly pull out of the race with transmission problems leaving CJ to cruise on to take the win.
The Pro4’s were up next on the 1.5 mile sprawling track. Johnny Greaves took his Monster Energy / Maxxis Tire / Toyota through the holeshot to the lead. CJ was patiently riding in the back getting ready to make his move. Douglas and Brascho tangled in the start/finish line turn that would damage both trucks and take them out of contention. Meanwhile, Johnny was extending his lead.
“Just let me know when CJ gets up to second,” Johnny said to his spotter.
Indeed CJ was on the move. He moved his Maxxis Tire / Monster Energy / Toyota up to 3rd by the competition caution–breaking the track record in the process previously held by his dad. He was pressuring the elder Greaves when Johnny experienced mechanical problem and pulled up with only 2 laps to go. CJ took the checkered for his first Pro4 win of the season.
After a night of more than 4 inches of rain, Sunday’s racing would take place on a different track than on Saturday. The skies cleared and the midday pro races were all set to start on time with the Pro4’s up first.
Johnny got the holeshot once again with the rest of the 10 truck field duking it out behind him. CJ was doing battle with Scott Douglas for the 3rd place spot and completed the pass in the gravel pit turn on lap 2. He also passed Jenkins putting the Greaves Duo in the top 2 spots as the competition caution flew at the end of lap 5.
The Greaves Duo put on a show the 2nd half of the race. CJ continually pressured Johnny for the lead, sticking his nose inside and outside but Johnny took the win with CJ right on his bumper for 2nd. Johnny extended his points lead by a few points while CJ was able to move up into the 3rd position.
Sunday’s Pro2 race was all CJ Greaves. He passed Keegan Kincaid on lap 2 and never looked back. CJ held his lead after the competition caution and landed a decisive victory that also propelled him to the points lead.
The Forest County Potawatomi Community Cup race was the final race of the weekend. This race puts Pro2’s and the Pro4’s against each other with the Pro2’s getting a head start. Both the Greaves lined up in the Pro4 leaving only 3 trucks in the Pro2. With very little resistance, Keegan Kincaid took a quick lead. Johnny and CJ were the top 2 Pro4’s and dug hard to catch up with the Pro2’s. CJ passed his dad on the last lap but ran out of time, Keegan Kincaid took the win with the Greaves Duo coming in 2nd and 3rd.
Next up for the Greaves Duo is Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 16-17th. The “Twin Cities Takedown” will take place at a brand new course, the ERX Motorpark. The track features extensive elevation changes, high-banked corners offering multiple race lines and well drained soils for a fast consistent race surface, according to TORC.
